With features like mulch-ready decks, large mouth base and power drive systems all these are standard in Craftsman lawn mowers, you will spend less time mowing and more time enjoying. No matter what size lawn you have, there is a mower designed for you; pushed or propelled, bagged or side discharged, high or low wheeled.
Each Craftsman has manufactured to meet or exceed the highest standards in the industry. There are three models in the Craftsman LT1000 series lawnmower with a few differences; of those models, the 27639 has the larger engine and is a better value.
The 27639 is powered by an 18-hp Briggs & Stratton Intek OHV engine. The Intek is a single-cylinder two-stroke engine in the middle of the B&S line that includes features that will keep it running for a long time. For example, the engine is aluminum with a cast-iron cylinder sleeve. In addition to using two-stroke lubrication (oil in the gas), the engine has a full-pressure lubrication system with replaceable oil filter. The engine also has an anti-vibration system (AVS) that helps keep the noise level down and the ride smooth. You can easily view the fuel level from the driver's seat.
The transmission is manually operated with six forward gears; the shifter is conveniently located within easy reach of the driver. There is also one reverse gear. The clutch pedal is on the left as it is on cars.
The 27639 makes a 42-inch cut across your lawn, which is a good width for lawns of 1 to 1-1/2 acres (about 40,000 to 60,000 square feet). This model can make a full 180-degree turn in just 18 inches. That means it is good for large lawns that have few small obstacles. Two belt-driven blades, with height adjustment from 1-1/2 to 4 inches, make the cut.
Cut grass is discharged out the right side, as on nearly every other lawn tractor. Options include a two- or three-bin rear bagger with side chute and a mulching kit. In addition, there's a rear connection for pulling a small utility cart. For wintertime, consider the front snow blade attachment, which is also an option.
The price on this entry-level model is relatively low, which means the manufacturer has cut some corners on this model, but nothing significant. The 27639 does not have a front bumper. The engine cover is plastic rather than steel (we actually prefer the plastic). The frame is constructed of 11-gauge steel, which is lighter than the 10-gauge steel found on more expensive models. The fuel tank holds 1-1/4 gallons, which is small but still adequate. The cutting deck doesn't have anti-scalping rollers, so you will have to drive a little more carefully along slopes and uneven terrain. And, of course, the manual transmission -- rather than an automatic -- also helps keep the cost down. However, dollar-for-dollar, the 27639 is a solid, adequate model that earns our Budget Buy rating.
Overall, the Craftsman LT1000 lawn tractor 27639 has a low-end price with a medium-grade engine that will cut large lawns for many years.
